Ultramarathoner Richard Gastelum's Body Found in Greenbelt
by Wish, 7/10/2007

The body of 62-year-old Richard Gastelum was found Sunday in the Barton Creek Greenbelt. Gastelum, an ultramarathoner, had been missing since Friday evening when he went out for a run and never came home.

"We got word I guess yesterday, that he was missing," Shannon Mims said.

Mims worked with Gastelum at the Brackenridge Emergency room where he was a long-time nurse. She said when he finished his shift Friday evening he planned to go for a run when he got home, even though there were severe thunderstorms in the area. He never returned home.

"We were at work yesterday, I was there for 12 hours and we were all worried about him. You want to get out there and do something, you don't want to sit there and worry," Mims said.

Gastelum was an experienced runner, who enjoyed running along the Barton Creek Greenbelt trails. Investigators say he started his run from his home near Commons Ford Park. He met a running buddy and they stopped and talked. Gastelum told the friend he was exactly six miles from his home. That was the last time he was seen alive. His body was found about four miles away in the Barton Creek Greenbelt East.

Investigators say the body was found on land right near Seismic Wall. No cause of death has been disclosed by APD.

"This guy was an ultra marathon runner, so we knew he could move and move quickly, so based on that, we took what his slowest time would be, what his fastest time would be, and we factored all that in. We looked at sort of in the middle and then searched and that's how we found him," APD Battalion Chief Harry Evans said.

Gastelum was a member of the Hill Country Trail Runners.
