UT's star miler--Leonel Manzano-- proved he is the best 1500-meter runner to ever wear burnt orange and white.
Manzano shaved two seconds off the UT school record in finishing second in the the 1500-meter at the 2007 AT&T U.S. Outdoor Track and Field Championship on Sunday in Indianapolis.
Manzano registered a historic run of 3:35.29, almost two seconds faster than the Texas school record (3:37.13) he set in winning the 2005 NCAA Championship. With his third sub-3:40 performance of the year, Manzano owns the top three fastest times in school history. His mark is the 10th fastest time in the world this year (including Alan Webb's winning mark).
Running in the rain, Manzano finished ahead of two-time Olympic medalist and American record holder Bernard Lagat and crossed the line just a few meters behind Alan Webb, who broke a 25-year old meet record with his third U.S. 1500-meter championship.
Manzano, who is from Marble Falls, ran the majority of the race in the middle of the pack. Halfway through, the senior-to-be moved into fifth-place in the lead pack.
At the bell lap, Manzano began to make his way to the front and into the top three.
By finishing second, Manzano qualified for the World Championships of track that will be held later on in the summer in Osaka, Japan.
