What’s New?
The Asics GEL-Cumulus has been a long-time favorite of runners looking for great cushioning without too much bulk. This fall’s update, the GEL-Cumulus IX is no exception and brings even more of Asics innovations to the cloud-inspired shoe.
Most notably for the first time in the GEL-Cumulus, the new model features the complete Asics’ Impact Guidance System (I.G.S.) and a Solyte midsole. The I.G.S., also seen on shoes like the GEL-Landreth and GT-2120, incorporates a larger GEL cushion and angled lateral flex grooves in the heel to provide more guidance to the foot from heel strike to midfoot weight bearing, giving the shoe a more stable and smooth feeling.
Solyte material in the new GEL-Cumulus’ midsole is lighter than EVA and SpEVA used in previous models and at the same time more responsive and durable. This new cushioning makes the GEL-Cumulus IX a good choice for underpronators to mild overpronators. In addition to a smoother and more durable ride, the GEL-Cumulus IX features brings Asics’ Personal Heel Fit (P.H.F.) technology to the line. The P.H.F. system includes memory foam around the heel that molds the shoe to runner’s foot, creating a snug yet comfortable feel.
In a nutshell, Asics has moved the Cumulus into its performance line with updates that keep the shoe a light and reliable model while making it a better fit and more durable. The women’s model has gone from 10.4 oz down to 9.5 oz, and the men’s model has dropped from 12.8 oz to 11.5 oz.
