The second annual Starflight 5-K will get underway Saturday morning at 8 a.m. on a loop course that circles around and through Zilker Park. Last year’s race didn’t get exactly get off to a flying start as there were some problems with the course, but John Ferguson has certified this year’s.
Starflight’s course will begin near the east entrance to the Zilker soccer fields on the north side of Zilker and follow the road around the park. After a short out-and-back section on Stratford, the course will cross over Barton Springs to the south side of Zilker, go around the Sunshine Camp and finish up on Park Road near the canoe rentals.
Race officials expect upward of 400 runners for this race (there’s also a kids K starting at 9 a.m.) which benefits the Star Flight Fund. That fund underwrites the costs of continuing education for helicopter crews on medicine, fire fighting and rescue techniques. The Starflight crews operate two rescue helicopters and fly more than 1000 rescue missions a year. One of the Starflight choppers will be on scene for the Saturday morning race.
Pre-registration and packet pick up will be Friday at the RunTex store on Riverside from 10-7 p.m. There will be raceday registration and packet pick up.
