by Ruth England, 1/26/2007

Running the AT &T marathon this year? Want to learn more about the course? Please come, then, and join Rogue Running for a bus course tour of the marathon course! We’ll have several experienced runners and coaches show you the route and give you mile-by-mile strategic advise on how best to tackle the 2007 AT & T marathon course. You’ll laugh and enjoy yourself, but you’ll learn a lot too; you’ll feel better prepared for the rigors of marathon day.

You’ll have two different time options and several tour guides to choose from:

Tour Time and Leaders:
Noon to 2:00 pm:

AT&T Austin Marathon Race Director, John Conley will be leading a bus tour of the course from noon to 2pm.  He has been the race director for the Austin Marathon (formerly the Freescale Marathon or the Motorola Marathon) for the past 9 years.  He was voted best race director in 2006, by Road Race Management.

John has been running for 36 years.  He had completed 16 marathons.  He is a former collegiate runner, ARC President, and founded of the Austin Distance Challenge in his Uptown Classic race director days.

John will provide in site to the course particulars as well as critical information about how best to approach this marathon.

Coach Steve Sisson
Coach Steve Sisson will lead a bus tour from noon to 2pm.  Steve Sisson is the owner of Rogue Running and University of Texas Women’s assistant Cross Country and Track coach.

Coach Sisson was a three-time all-American in track & cross country at the University of Texas at Austin and a four-time Southwest conference champion at the 3000 meter steeplechase and 5000 meter distances.

He represented the United States internationally at the 1993 IAAF World Half-Marathon Championships in Brussels, Belgium and the Niagata (Japan) Ekiden Relay, in a 1:03:32.

More recently Steve Sisson has been the color commentator for the marathon for 3 years.  He has been busy coaching Rogue’s Performance Based group and coaching the distance girls at the University of Texas.

Tours from 2:30 pm to 5:00 pm

Coach Karen Smith has been coaching for Rogue for 3 years.  She has coached marathoners, 5k runners, 10k runners and triathletes.  She was voted one of Texas’ Best Run Coaches for 2006, by Texas City Sports.  Karen is also a biomechanical expert and teaches the Chi Running method.  When she isn’t coaching for Rogue she also works at Advanced Rehabilitation teaching running biomechanics to help deal with injuries and is an acupuncturist specializing in sports medicine.

Karen has qualified for the Boston Marathon many times and her current goal is to complete her 20th marathon this year at Boston. Karen’s passion for running is contagious and she finds great reward in coaching as an opportunity to share her enthusiasm for the sport and help others reach their goals.

Coach Phil "Panther" Carmical has been coaching for Rogue for almost 4 years.  Phil has coached marathoners, 10k and 5k runners, Duathletes and Triathletes while with Rogue.  Phil is also the founder and President of the Austin Duathletes, the world’s first ever Duathlon club.

Coach Carmical has qualified for Boston numerous times, has won overall or placed in the overall top 3 in numerous running races at various distances around Texas, and is the current Duathlon Texas State Champion for his age group.  His marathon PR is 3:06:00.  Phil ran his first 5K when he was 32 years old and placed in his age group. A year later, at 33, he did his first duathlon, again placing in his age group, and, since then, he has run 11 marathons and has coached hundreds of athletes.  He is a certified cycling coach for USA Cycling and was recently voted one of the top cyclists in Texas by "City Sports" magazine.
