An internal review has cleared Texas Tech men's track and field coach Wes Kittley of allegations that he paid former sprinter Terry Beard. The investigation, headed by Texas Tech faculty athletics representative Dr. Robert J. Baker, found no extra benefits were provided by Kittley or anyone else associated with the track and field program.
"I'm very pleased with the resolution of the investigation," Kittley said in a statement. "It's been a very difficult thing to go through and I'm glad the investigation is complete on our part."
In a story that appeared April 21 in the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, Beard said he received $4,200 in payments from Kittley to pay for room and board last spring. Beard, from Mount Pleasant, later recanted the allegations in a signed transcript of an interview with Texas Tech compliance officer Jennifer Brashear.
Tech's findings also dispute an allegation in the Star-Telegram story that Kittley gave $300 in an envelope to sprinter Michael Mathieu to pay Beard's portion of the rent.
