Bob Kennedy, a two-time Olympian and the greatest American 5000-meter runner in history, announced his retirement from track and field. The 35-year-old never won an Olympic medal, but won four NCAA championships (at Indiana University), four U.S. 5000 titles and holds the American record for the 3000 and 5000 meters.
Kennedy said he will concentrate on his business ventures and support his wife Melinda Kennedy who is running for Marion County (Indiana) prosecutor. The couple have one-year-old twins. Kennedy also owns The Running Company and has three stores in the Indianapolis area. He indicated he may soon begin working for a running footwear company as well.
"I have no regrets," said Kennedy. "Of course, you're always thinking, 'I wish I could run have done this. I wish I have run a little faster.' But this what keeps you running."
Kennedy's final race was the '04 New York City Marathon which ended in a DNF.
