Longhorn Men Finish Second in Regionals; Qualify for NCAAs
by Wish, 11/13/2007

The Texas men's cross-country team has qualified for the NCAA Division I Cross-Country Championships which will be held this coming Monday (November 19th) in Terre Haute, Indiana.

The Longhorns finished second with 52 points at the NCAA South Central Region Championship in Arkansas over the weekend to earn an automatic spot at the NCAAs.

"The goal was to finish in the top two and remain healthy," said associate head coach Jason Vigilante. "That's exactly what we were looking for and [we] feel good about the experience. We're really looking forward to going to NCAAs."

UT placed five scorers in the top 22 of the 10,000-meter race, with all five runners earning NCAA All-South Region Team honors by virtue of finishing in the top 25.

Host Arkansas won for the third consecutive season, totaling 37 points. Texas A&M finished third with 101 points ahead of No. 4 Lamar (122 points) and No. 5 LSU (188 points).

Junior Leonel Manzano of Marble Falls led the Horns with a 29:30 for second place. Senior Erik Stanley from Spring was fourth overall in 29:35.2 with graduate student Owen Washburn from Massachusetts finishing third for Texas and 14th overall in 30:11. Senior Darren Brown of Spring and junior Kyle Miller from Katy rounded out the top five scorers.

Indiana State University will host the NCAAs. The men's race begins at 11 a.m. (Austin time)  followed by the women’s race at 11:55. Both championship races will be broadcast live on CSTV
