Weekend Warriors, Get Ready for the Merrell Oyster
by Doug Larson, 10/9/2007

Weekend warriors and elite athletes take notice!  The Merrell Oyster Racing Series (www.OysterRacingSeries.com) is excited to make its way to Austin, TX on October 28, 2007.  Billed as the “Ultimate Urban Adventure Race”, the inaugural Oyster will have 3- and 6-person teams running, biking, skating/scootering, paddling, creeking and trekking their way around Austin and the surrounding cityscape using their physical and mental prowess to complete the 40-50 mile course in the shortest amount of time.  The “adventure” part really takes shape as the course is unknown until 5 minutes before the race and those with keen navigational skills can route the shortest path to complete the course – perhaps in a winning effort!  With co-ed, men, women and family divisions there’s something for everyone.

The Oyster requires racers to combine pure athleticism with thought-provoking strategy…. and mixes in absolute fun.  In previous races, while not only performing athletic endeavors such as running a total of 8-10 miles (not all at one time), biking 20-30 total miles (not all at one time) and skating/scootering 3-5 miles, teams have ridden roller coasters, repelled from buildings, shopped, paddled, thrown darts, completed brain-teasers and cleaned up rivers.  It’s like the Amazing Race®, but on steroids.  Or, in this era of political correctness, supplements!

The Austin Oyster takes place at REI (601 N. Lamar) and should take 4 to 8 hours to complete depending upon your athletic capabilities and ability to problem solve. Each of the 6 to 10 legs of the race begin and end at REI with net proceeds benefiting the Austin Parks Foundation. New to the 2007 race line-up is the addition of two new divisions for the race: the “6-Pack” which is a team challenge event or ideal for those not sure they can tackle the full course, and the “Family Fun Division” which is a scaled down version of the course focusing on children ages 14 and younger teaming up with their parents.
