RunTex is proud to announce Gazelle Foundation as beneficiary for the 2007 “EAS Run for the Water 10 Miler.” The event will take place on November 11, 2007 and challenge endurance athletes through the hills of west Austin and down to the shores of Town Lake. It is the second of six road races comprising the Austin Distance Challenge which concludes in February with the AT&T Austin Marathon.
The EAS 10 Miler is titled “Run for the Water” because one of the Gazelle Foundation’s programs involves constructing potable water sources for the people in Burundi, Africa. Inspired by the story of Gilbert Tuhabonye, Gazelle Foundation’s mission is to improve life for the people of Burundi and provide educational assistance for children in our own community.
Gilbert, now a celebrity in the world of running, was born in Songa, Burundi where he barely survived civil warfare. In 1993, Gilbert escaped the classroom where hundreds Tutsi of were burned to death by opposing Hutu forces. Since then, he has become a national champion runner for Abilene Christian University and founded a training program called Gilbert’s Gazelles.
Unfortunately, the war between the Hutu and Tutsi continues today. For this reason, Gilbert and his friends in the running community seek to unify the people of Burundi. Their assistance through Gazelle Foundation is non tribe-specific and focuses on providing clothing, shelter and medical assistance in addition to better water sources.
